Finding the Constellations
Learning to find the Constellations is one of the best ways to get started in Astronomy and a great family activity. Learning the sky is similar to learning your way around a new city. You learn the major landmarks and the general layout first and then add more details with time. The sky is the same way. Once you learn the basic layout of the sky it never changes.
Star wheels are great and easy ways to learn the sky. Just spin the wheel until the date is lined up with the time you are observing and hold it over your head. They can help you see what the sky is like any date/time of the year. Great family project. Note: Make sure the one you pick is for your latitude. 50-40 deg. for northern United States and Europe. 30-40 deg for the central and southern United States.
