Sprites are large-scale electrical discharges that occur high above thunderstorm clouds and are triggered by positive lightning strikes between the thundercloud and the ground. They often occur in clusters 30–50 miles above the Earth’s surface. Read more about them on Wikipedia.
To spot these occurrences, the MeteorCam needs a clear view over the tops distant thunderstorms. The camera has captured Sprites from storms as close as about 50 miles to over 400 miles away! They are usually most prevalent in the springtime.
